Welcome to the End of the Semester

This is what I would tell my scholars that are nearing the end of the year. As my seniors try to relax and settle in. Thinking that their severe case of “Senioritis” would set in.

For those who don’t know. This a viral phenomenon that affects all Seniors after spring break.

Symptoms can come in many forms such as

Lack of focus
Laziness
Forgetfulness
Procrastination
And Sleeping

As an Educational professional, who’s well versed in such things. I have a cure. It’s called

More work

It’s like a shock to their systems!

It Couldn’t Be Done

However, before giving them such a potent dose. I would recite one of my favorite poems by Edgar A. Guest entitled “It Couldn’t Be Done”. I’ll tell you why is this my favorite poem in the end.

Somebody said that it couldn’t be done
But he with a chuckle replied
That “maybe it couldn’t,” but he would be one
Who wouldn’t say so till he’d tried.
So he buckled right in with the trace of a grin
On his face. If he worried he hid it.
He started to sing as he tackled the thing
That couldn’t be done, and he did it!
Somebody scoffed: “Oh, you’ll never do that;
At least no one ever has done it;”
But he took off his coat and he took off his hat
And the first thing we knew he’d begun it.
With a lift of his chin and a bit of a grin,
Without any doubting or quiddit,
He started to sing as he tackled the thing
That couldn’t be done, and he did it.
There are thousands to tell you it cannot be done,
There are thousands to prophesy failure
There are thousands to point out to you one by one,
The dangers that wait to assail you.
But just buckle in with a bit of a grin,
Just take off your coat and go to it;
Just start in to sing as you tackle the thing
That “cannot be done,” and you’ll do it.

The reason why this is my favorite poem. It’s because I discovered this poem at the end of the semester of my senior year in college. I read this poem when my paternal Grandfather died as well as my maternal Grandmother. This was the fuel I needed.

Finish!!!

I then proceeded to encourage my scholars to keep going. They are a few weeks away from Graduation. Keep going!

For those whose reading this. I know you’ve been through a lot. Rest if you must but keep going!!

Continue to do well.
Continue to beat the odds
Continue to make an impact

Talk to you later
